Every year, Bay Team elects half of its board members, so each serves a 2-year term.

To keep the club innovative, to encourage new ideas, to gain new energy, we like to have new people on the board as often as possible.

Contact any of us ASAP if you're interested, know someone who might be, or just know of someone who'd make a good candidate.

    Q: What positions are open this year?

  • Q: What experience is necessary to be on the board?

    No board experience is necessary. Main requirements are:

  • Should have attended at least a couple of our trials and have a general idea of what agility is about.
  • Needs reliable email and needs to read email daily.
  • Must play well with others (rest of the board) and not run with scissors--ok, scratch the scissors part.
  • Preferably be able to attend at least half of our club meetings, preferably more (because a quorum requires the presence of at least half the board). We usually have 4-6 meetings a year; review dates and minutes of past meetings.
  • Should have an interest in the club and in agility, maybe even have ideas on maintaining or improving the club or our trials.

    Q: What are the advantages to being on the board?

  • Influence the direction of one of the largest agility clubs.
  • Influence the direction of agility in the Bay Area.
  • Get a deeper understanding of what's going on and what makes the agility world run.
  • Meet new people and have others get to know you better. By working for the club, you'll get to know more of the interesting and talented people who make up the Bay Team.
  • Contribute to making the club more cohesive, more interesting, more appealing, or...
  • Simply help the club to continue to function by participating.
  • Q: Do board members also have to run trials?

    No. Trials are the responsibility of separate trial committees. The board doesn't get involved. Those are separate jobs. No Board member is required to participate on trial committees.

    Q: Are new board members all alone in this?

    And where can I get the scoop on what it's like to be on the board?

    All current and past board members are willing to discuss their experiences and to serve as advisors and mentors to new boardies.

  • Q: What does the Vice-President do? Will it take all my time for the next 2 years?

  • Participate in board email discussions/votes.
  • Preside over club meetings when the president can't attend (see "what does the president do", below, for details about that).
  • Attend as many meetings as possible to ensure that we have a legal quorum (3 board members, 2 of whom must be officers).
  • Serve as Membership Director, which entails:
    • Read membership apps, submit to Board for votes and shepherd through voting process, distribute info to approporiate parties.
    • Take info from approved membership apps and send welcoming email to the club.
    • Provide new members with welcome package (by-laws and whatever).
    • Work with database czar and treasurer on membership renewals etc.
    • Can make this job what you want/have time for: Think of ways to promote club membership; serve as membership's representative on the board; improve new-member process and membership tracking; make sure that the membership web page and application form are up-to-date and say/ask what we want them to; whatever.
    • Ability to receive faxes is useful; Garril has fax she's willing to donate if you don't have one.
  • Q: What does the Treasurer do? Isn't the current person Treasurer-for-life?

  • Participate in board email discussions/votes.
  • Attend as many meetings as possible to ensure that we have a legal quorum (3 board members, 2 of whom must be officers).
  • Maintain the Club's moneys in checking and savings accounts as needed; reconcile monthly statements and such.
  • Summarize the Club's finances quarterly and produce year-end detailed reports.
  • Produce summary report on current finances for each meeting.
  • Deposit membership and entry-fee checks
  • Write checks for all Bay Team ongoing and trial expenses (judges, field, expense reimbursement, etc.).
  • Maintain the Bay Team charge account used for some things (e.g., web site payments).
  • Produce financial reports for the results of each of our 4 or 5 trials yearly.
  • Be the primary contact for paperwork and payments such as insurance, trailer registration, and so on.
  • Q: What does a Member-at-Large do?

  • Participate in board email discussions/votes.
  • Attend as many club meetings as possible to ensure a quorum.
  • Q: What does the president do? Will it take all my time for the next 2 years?

    Notes from current prez, Wendy Bruce:

    I encourage others to consider this role. The President simply presides over member meetings and email discussions of the board. Abilities needed:
  • preside over club meetings & create agenda w/sec'ty
  • to remain neutral (or appear to) until all opinions are heard.
  • to politely cut off people who are being repetitive or argumentative.
  • to make sure even the shyest (do we have any of those?) people have an opportunity to provide input.
  • the ability to end a discussion that is going nowhere.
  • the ability to manage a meeting.
  • sum up discussions, and help nail down the choices for the decision the group is trying to make.
  • ability to read and understand the by-laws (see link above) and to keep within the club's legal parameters.
  • This job doesn't take much time, it doesn't require any in-depth knowledge of how trials run, or about agility in general.

    Wendy is eager & willing to serve as mentor, advisor, etc. for new prez.

    Q: What does the secretary do? Karey seems to do everything!

    Note that Karey does everything because she wants to. This does NOT define the secretary position!

    Being secretary is simply:

  • Assist prez w/meeting agendas & notify club of upcoming meetings
  • Take roll and minutes at all meetings.
  • Type them up and deliver them afterwards to club members within a week or 2 (by email, a few snailmail copies, and PDF for webmaster to post).
