Thursday report summarized from complete USDAA results pages

[Same note as yesterday: I'm going by dogs' names & hoping that they're the Bay Team dogs]

Performance Grand Prix Quarterfinals: This determines who gets into the semifinal round. The only ones participating in this round are those who didn't earn a bye into the semifinals at a Regional event. And it's not hard to miss that--even if all the dogs at a Regional run clean, they give byes only to the top 50%, and the differences in time can be fractions of a second. So many of the dogs in quarterfinals are great dogs who maybe took a few extra steps or knocked a bar.

Performance 22":
Bay Teamers Brenn and Carlene Chandler, Hobbes and Rob Michalski, and Apollo and Channan Fosty are going to the semis.
Also Kyna and Candy Gaiser.

Perf 16"
Other locals:
Bodee and Marti Fuquay

Perf 12"
Bay Teamers Gryphon and Kathie Leggett

Championship Steeplechase Quarterfinals: I believe it's the same story as above, except you can compete if you want to even if you already got a bye for semis? (The rules change so much I can't keep track--) Moving on to the semis:

TEAM: There are THREE divisions for Team: Championship, Performance, and Veterans, which is dogs who've previously been in the nationals and are at least 8 year of age (Or some similar criteria--that's changed over time, too). TEAM consists of four individual events--there are 3 dogs on each Ch team and 2 on each Perf & Vet team--and the individual scores are combined to determine which top teams go on to the final Relay. So one dog could do poorly in one event but if everyone on the team does reasonably well in all the other events, they could still be in the finals.

TEAM JUMPERS: Some results in the individual events for Bay Teamers who Didn't E (key in this class :-), although I don't see a lot of E's on this course -- it's actually Time plus Faults, so if you're really fast, you can make up for any course faults)

Friday results summarized from USDAA lists

Steeplechase advancements to final round Saturday night

Friday was the steeplechase semifinals (the performance steeplechase is called "performance speed jumping").

Placement in the semifinals determines running order (reverse order by placement) but doesn't affect the score in the finals; there's no cumulative scoring in Steeplechase.

Complete semifinals results in PDF here: http://usdaa.com/article.cfm?newsID=1332

You can buy live streaming of the Steeplechase, Performance Speed Jumping & Junior Handler Spotlight finals tonight --I believe for free! (or maybe $6)-- at 8:00 p.m. here: (and hopefully they won't have problems with the video feed again tonight)

http://usdaa.com/video/

Correction on tonight's live video: California time it all starts around 5:00 or 5:30. And the live video is FREE tonight because it was dead in the water for last night's show. So check in and watch! There will be some awesome fast runs and some familiar faces out in the ring.

Perf 16": Only the top 10 dogs go on to the finals. Times for those dogs were between 24.39 and 26.19 seconds, very fast! I don't see any Bay Teamers in the top group.

Perf 12": Only the top 8 go on. Times from 26.04 to 28.20. No bay teamers in the top group. Bodee and Marti F. placed 10th; Gryphon and Kathy Leggett had trouble with the weaves, she reports, so lost time--they must have been fast on the rest of the course because their time was still 31.45.

Perf 22": No bay teamers that I see, but dang we were so close! Top 8 dogs went, times from 25.24 to 28.14. Brenn and Carlene Chandler, Hobbes and Rob Michalski, and Apollo and channan Fosty all finished in the top 20 out of a whole lot of dogs.

Championship 26" 12 dogs advanced, times from 25.12 to 27.32. Icon and Channon Fosty are in 2nd place going into the finals, Wings and Rob Michalski are in 5th. Kidd and Tania Chadwick in a real heartbreaker were 13th at 27.58 and were told yesterday that they were in but apparently are not. If that's Lisa Williams' Carson in the list at 14th, they also just missed the cutoff. Kep and Laura Jones had a good enough time but faults, same with Fable & Rachel Sanders.; Rachel's Stuie also had faults.

In 22" Ch, 20 dogs advanced, from 23.64 to 25.53 times. Diana Wilson's Cassidy in first place going into the finals--I think it's diana's. Maja and Silvina Bruera are in 5th (just ahead of last year's champion Juice). Sweep and Ace (whom I assume are Jim Basic's and Nancy Gyes' dogs) are in 16th and 17th going in. Others who had great clean runs but just not quite fast enough (in the 26 second range) included Beck and Linda Green, Kiwi and Linda Green, Thyme and Sharon Freilich.

In 16" Ch, 12 dogs advanced with times between 23.39 and 25.85. Luka and Ashley Deacon are in 2nd place going in with a time of 23.60, beating the fastest 22" dogs. Wave and Marcy Mantell are in 6th. Clean but not making time were Manja and Anne Kajava --- oops, they apparently DID make time, as they ran in the finals.

In 12" Ch, I don't see any bay teamers in, and another painful miss: 8 dogs advanced with times between 24.25 and 28.09; Quill and Sandy Rogers finished in 9th at 28.13, only .04 seconds away from making it to the finals. Porsche and Debbie Ogg were right behind them in 13th place with a time of 28.88. Times are SO close in steeplechase!

Team Standings after three rounds

if they're not already done.)

TEAM STANDARD NOTES

(Sorry, I'm not going to dig very far for names--missed too many yesterday and there are so many dogs!)

In Team Standard, the mantra is "Don't E". If you E, your team loses 150 points (or so); a clean fast run is worth probably 110 points, so that's a huge loss.

16" championship, Luka and Ashley Deacon finished 3rd, Wave and Marcy Mantell 4th, both with clean runs.
12" championship, Porsche and Debbie Ogg had a decent time and 5 faults.
26" championship, Icon and Channan Fosty finished 6th with a clan run; Kir (if that's Katie Tolve) clean and 11th. Also running clean, Brody and Jim Aitkin, Kidd and Tania Chadwick, Chaps and Jean Danver. Several Bay Team dogs had a few faults but are still in the running.
22" champion, Cassidy finished 1st again (would be cool if that is Diana Wilson), Gina (probably my Boost's sister) came in 4th (just had to throw that in). Also clean is Heath and Terry LeClair, Killy and Dave Grubel, Cirque and Sharon Freilich, Kiwi and Linda Greene, Ace and Nancy Gyes [uh oh there are a couple of Aces], Beck and Robert Greene.

With a quick glance at the top dogs, in

22" Performance, Hobbes and Rob M. were 10th and clean, Cate E and Leslie Bickel were clean, Brenn and Carlene had a couple of faults, Apollo and Channan F had a couple of faults.
12" Perf Gryphon and Kathie Leggett came in 3rd.

TEAM STANDINGS AFTER 3 ROUNDS (Jumpers, Snooker, Standard)

Performance ("Versatility") teams: The top 12 teams will go the the relay finals, but today's gambler's course could shake things up a lot. There are 116 Performance teams competing.

  • 30th: "Shadow Boxing", Apollo/Channan F with Shadow/Debbie Chun, 435 points, 28 points out and we're really getting down to where it's tough to make up the points but not impossible--everyone's doing really well with points this close.

Saturday Steeplechase finals

For those who didn't get a chance to see the incredible handling and super speed of the dogs in the Championship and Performance [aka "speed jumping"] Steeplechase World Championship Finals in Scottsdale, Bay Teamers made a great showing.

Ashley Deacon and Luka won the 16" Steeplechase for I believe the 4th time!

In 22", Nancy Gyes/Ace and Jim Basic/Sweep were 1st and 2nd for the longest time but got barely edged out and ended up 3rd and 5th, pretty fine work for the hundreds of 22" dogs entered! It *was* Diana Wilson and Cassidy who won the semifinals! Woot! But they had bobbles in the final round, although you could still see the speed of that team. Silvina Bruera and Maja also had bobbles but looked pretty darned good.

And in 26", an all-border-collie-except-one-terv group, Rob Michalski and Wings the Tervuren WON! And Channan Fosty with Icon had a lovely smooth run to just get edged out and into 3rd place! TWO bay teamers on the podium!

Sunday Grand Prix finals

Bay Teamers in teh finals include:

16"
Ashley Deacon and Luka
Anne Kajava and Manja

22:
Kyna and Maureen Strenfel
Motion and Anne Kajava
Ace and Nancy Gyes
also local Rider and Susan Chochran

26"
Icon and CHannan Fosty
Kir and Katie Tolve

Another exciting finals round!

In 16", Ashley Deacon and Luka were seeded 4th after semifinals) but as usual pushed the limits of possibility with a time of 30.35, much faster than any prior 16"er. Anne Kajava with Manja ran after him and put on a real show but couldn't quite catch him at 30.79, and then the top seed went in 30.56, so Anne finished in 3rd place but Ashley won again! Two Bay Teamers on the podium again.

In 22", there were an amazing number of contact faults called, mostly on the dogwalk. To be different, Maureen and Kyna were called on the down contact to the Aframe, dropping them out of placements. Anne Kajava and Motion had one of the fastest runs at 29.75 but were called I believe--also to be different--on the teeter contact. After her, an amazing THREE dogs were tied briefly for first place with 30.26 seconds, then. Nancy Gyes and Ace put in an amazing time of 29.43. Juice and Marcus Topps (who have won GP previously 3 times), running right after her, really pushed it out to 29.07! Then Susan Chochran with Rider (and sometime student of Nancy Gyes) blew everyone away, becoming the first and only to break 29, with an amazing run at 28.61.

With only one dog left to run, Nancy was in third--and the top-seeded dog tied her time, also! Unbelievable! So they had a runoff for 3rd. The other dog, Slick, ran first and missed a contact, but pushed hard and came in with a time of 29.08. Nancy just needed to run smoothly and get her contacts, but it wasn't to be--most of the way through the run, they were also called on a contact, and they couldn't make up the difference in time, ending at 29.55 for 4th place for Nancy, leaving Susan Cochran also as 1st.

I'm stunned--ties in time do happen from time to time, but I've never seen a 3-way tie before, and I doubt that any of us have ever seen a 3-way and a 2-way tie in the top 6 dogs ever, let alone in the national championships! True, one of the 30.26 second runs had 5 faults, but still, pretty interesting.

In the 26", you could see everyone trying to be conservative with their contacts. Icon and Channon Fosty, seeded 12th in the finals, ran very well and came in with a time of 30.63, putting them in first for the next 4 dogs until one came in at 30.54. No one else was close until the 4th seeded dog came in at 30.65, so not quite matching Icon's time, leaving her in 2nd. Three dogs to go-- The 3rd seed had a beautiful time of 30.41 but were called on the dogwalk down. The 2nd seed came in finally breaking 30 at 29.87, dropping Icon to 3rd. The 1st seeded dog barely edged Icon by 2 hundredths of a second with a time of 30.61. So Icon finishes 4th with a beautiful fast clean run in a really tough, tight field.

Katie Tolve and Kir, in I believe their first-ever appearance in the national championship finals, seeded 9th, had a nice smooth run and a time of 31.42 but were called on the dogwalk contact. (They had a lot of first-class company on that!)

(Jim Basic notes: Slick is a littermate to Diana Wilson's Cassidy [see yesterday's steeplechase finals] and Channan's Icon. A lot of speed and talent in that litter!)
