Subject: [Bay Team] quick CPE question
Hi club, the bay team summer CPE trial is coming up in a couple weeks, this year a month earlier than last year and in Palo Alto. It turns out the entry is substantially thinner than last year's summer CPE.
Any ideas why? Is CPE turning out to be mostly a north bay thing, not so popular in the south bay?
Inquiring minds want to know, for future planning! My recent little survey (whose results I haven't read in detail yet) had a couple south bay people here and there say they wished we had more CPE in the south...
(PS the trial secretary <dconnet@bayteam.org> says he'll take late entries, in case you just forgot!)

Summary of responses
38 people responded, most with more than one reason for not coming (all of which I tally individually here). I'm not sure how accurate the response counts are since many of the responses were suggesting why OTHER people didn't enter, rather than why the respondent his/herself didn't enter. The no-camping thing came up a lot but not nearly as much as variations on the date simply being in conflict with other commitments/priorities, and variations on "the economy".
- 9 said: conflict with Corgi AKC or other dog event that weekend
- 10 said: other date conflicts (fathers day, graduation, etc)
- 4: too many trials [in June], picking and choosing which ones I enter
- 7: "economy"
- 2: too far to travel
- 5: want more than 4 runs per day
- 9: No camping (two respondents actually being people who would have come if there had been camping)
- 7: CPE popularity waning (3 suggested because it's not encouraged by our trainers, 1 because not enough CPE's are offered in the south bay, 1 because of the newly inflated title requirements)
- 1: maybe because it wasn't announced on the announcements elist
Possible Misconceptions noted in the responses
- "South bay CPE’s are always smaller than North bay’s." In fact in 2008 the twin creeks CPE was the larger of the year.
- "Camping is heavily used at south bay CPE’s." In fact at last year’s March CPE at Sunnyvale, we only had one RV signup.
- "We went to the 2-ring 4-runs-per-day format because..." In fact we went to this format mostly to insure we fit into two rings without turning away entrants; two rings being the max our CPE sites can fit (Santa Rosa, and now Mitchell Park if we stay there).
